A coaster is a small mat which can be placed under a glass or mug to protect the surface underneath from liquid stains or marks, from damage by heat, or from chips or dents caused by the base of the mug itself. Coasters come in many materials and shapes, and are usually a little bigger in dimension than the bottom of a mug. They are used both at mealtimes, as part of a place setting, and anywhere else a drink might be taken, for instance on a coffee table or computer desk.
